COWICHAN LAKE DISTRICT

T

he Cowichan Lake district, with its communities of Youbou, Mesachie Lake, Honeymoon Bay and Lake Cowichan, is home to some of Vancouver Island’s most spectacular rainforest and one of Vancouver Island’s largest freshwater lakes. Be prepared to discover this magnificent gateway to almost every outdoor adventure imaginable.

Whether your are coming to enjoy the pristine waters of Lake Cowichan, Nitinat Lake or the Cowichan River, or whether you are coming to visit the ancient forest of the Carmanah and Walbran, or hike the West Coast or Juan de Fuca Trails, you will find it easy to satisfy your desire for adventure or for sheer relaxation right here.

Fishing
Year round the Lake’s moderate climate and outstanding regional parks play host to day visitors, campers and eco-tourists alike. The region boasts the title of “fly fishing capital of Canada” since the early 1900’s, attracting royalty and celebrities in search of Rainbow, Cutthroat, Brown Trout, Kokanee and Steelhead.

Water Sports
Boating, swimming and inner tubing put the fun into summer days. Rentals of kayaks and inner tubes, flat bottomed cruising boats and houseboats are available. The Cowichan Lake marina provides complete facilities including a store for supplies, tackle, fishing licenses, boat rentals, fuel and a boat ramp. Water skiers love the open waters of the Cowichan while windsurfers can find the ultimate ride with the elements at Nitinat Lake, a saltwater tidal lake renown for its perfect winds. Guided trips through the Narrows provide eco-tours to the Pacific Ocean.

Trails
Trails and hiking opportunities abound. Cowichan River Trail offers a scenic hike along the Cowichan River Corridor. A spur of the Cowichan Valley Trail (Trans Canada Trail) utilizes old rail routes providing a three hour cycling corridor from Glenora into the Town of Lake Cowichan.

Mushrooms
Depending on the season, guided tours may be available for the ever popular Chanterelle mushroom harvesting and lessons on mushroom hunting or wilderness adventures on horseback.

Events
Annual events to take in include the Great Lake Walk, the Salmon and Mushroom Festival and the Jetski and Bathtub Races. The visitor information centre at Saywell Park is open in the summer.

Be sure to check with visitor information about logging activity and logging road etiquette.
