The Cowichan received its name from the Coast Salish Tribes that originally populated the area. Quw’utsun’, which means "The Warmland" was the name given to this area, where the climate was warm and the natural harvests and fish were bountiful. The rich culture, the arts and culture and the history of the First Nations people that settled in the area are evident throughout the region.

Totem Tours Current statistics show that Downtown Duncan’s biggest draw to visiting tourists is its totem poles, one of which is the widest in the world. It is for this reason that there are free guided walking tours of the totems in the downtown area. Visit Website
