EXPLORE: FORESTRY

Forestry has long been the economic backbone of the Cowichan region. As a result forestry related activities are intertwined with the history, and the culture of the area.

BC Forest Discovery Centre
"Old One-Spot", a forty-five ton, forty-six horse powered steam locomotive built in 1911, transported logs out of remote locations. A 1918 one-ton Maxwell truck with wooden wheels spent years hauling telephone poles and pilings throughout the Cowichan Valley. In its day the biggest logging truck on Vancouver Island was a 1919 five-ton "Republic" truck with solid back tires and pneumatic front tires for logging in the Sooke area. All these and many other historical marvels of transportation history are also on display at the BC Forest Discovery Centre. Duncan.
