MADE IN COWICHAN: MUSEUMS

The Cowichan is rich in history and culture. For a ‘window ’ into our past, be sure to visit one of the eight museums in the region. Through photos and artifacts you ’ll get the true picture of pioneering life in the Cowichan. Learn about the logging industry at the BC Forest Discovery Centre. Visit the Cowichan Valley Museum and find out what hospital life was like at the turn of the century in Duncan. Step into a charming one-room school in Crofton. Check out a mining tunnel, a general store and post office at Lake Cowichan ’s Kaatza Museum. The museum itself is housed in a restored Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway station constructed in 1912.At the Cowichan Bay Maritime Museum – right on the water -see boat restoration from simple plywood dinghies to elegant cedar lapstreak boats.

BC Forest Discovery Centre
At the BC Forest Discovery Centre, a stroll around the grounds will quickly transform one into an exciting, educational experience. With many exhibits for the whole family, there is always something new to explore. Let one of our historic trains take you on a tour around our 100-acre wooded site!

History buffs will enjoy this museum where artifacts and archives document Chemainus's rich history. Located in Waterwheel Park in downtown Chemainus.

Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre & Historic Fisherman's Wharf
In the heart of historic Cowichan Bay the Maritime Centre has a unique design as the displays run down Fisherman's Wharf which was originally built in the mid 1800s to serve the Provincial Government boats which brought supplies to the early homesteading pioneers.

Cowichan Valley Museum
The Museum is situated in Duncan's "Heritage Designated" 1912 Railway Station along the E&N Railway in the centre of Duncan. Exhibits illustrate the vibrant history of pioneer life in the Cowichan Valley, including the Alderlea General Store, early medical equipment used in the King's Daughters' Hospital and a gallery depicting early life in the Valley.

Kaatza Station Museum
Located in the 1913 E&N railway station in the town of Lake Cowichan. Pioneer life displays include mining, forestry, general store, post office and railway history. Also a 1928 'Shay' Steam Train. Call (250) 749-6142 Cowichan Lake District

Old Koksilah School Museum
Tours by appointment year round. An historic one-room school house has been fully restored and offers a peek into the unique classroom history -Duncan area

Olde School House Museum
Sit in a desk in this early 20th century schoolhouse and peruse old textbooks. An ecclectic mix of school, home, farm and industry items - Crofton area. Seasonal (250) 246-2456

Shawnigan Lake Museum
Open March to November Located in the retired Shawnigan Lake Fire Hall. Exhibits reflect the life of early settlers, lumbering, farming and the recreational history of the area Call (250) 743-9287
